Osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by low bone mass and distorted internal bone architecture that leads to broken bones with only minimal trauma. It is usually diagnosed by a Bone Density Study called a DEXA-Scan. Normally, healthy bones can absorb a large amount of force before they break, but in osteoporosis even simple things, like stepping off a curb wrong, can result in a fracture. A major risk factor for developing osteoporosis is the loss of estrogen women experience after menopause, and men who have low testosterone levels. Osteoporosis is absolutely seen in both men and women!
